hammerhead
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hammerhead is an interactive sculpture that uses optics and electronics to help people experience the world differently. This mobile sculpture gives people the opportunity to move around and explore a space from a different point of view.
Users see to either side instead of to the front through the use of mirrors and lenses. Sensors pointing forward and to both sides allow the user to know when someone is approaching them. The side sensors vibrate the handles to mimic the lateral sensors on a hammerhead shark. The vibrations increase in intensity as the object or person gets closer. The front sensor gives auditory feedback in the form of a click which gets faster as the sculpture gets closer to things.
Hammerhead's goal is for people to understand that the way humans see the world isn't the only way, we share the world with many other creatures.
Hammerhead was shown at Ryerson's 4th Year New Media show Meta at the Burroughes Building in Toronto.
One of Ryerson University's newpapers, The Eyeopener, did a story about my piece. The article can be found on their website here.
The Torontoist also wrote a nice entry about the show that mentions my piece. Click here.

My friend Adam filmed and edited a video of META where Hammerhead was shown. He shows my piece around 1:20.
